My mom and I were driving to my mom's cousins house in Foley, MO for a visit when we saw her standing in the road. We could tell one of her front legs was badly injured but she ran off when we tried to approach her. After chasing her around for a while, we managed to corner her against the side of a farm house and throw a sheet over her. I picked her and put her in the backseat of our car. After taking her to the vet, we determined that she had been shot several times and was likely hit by a car several weeks before we found her.
For several weeks, we tried to get wounds on the top of Alexis' paw to heal. If we could get the wounds to heal, the vets thought there might be a chance they could re-break her leg and pin it back together in a more normal position. Unfortunately, the nerve damage was so severe we could not prevent Alexis from walking on the wounded leg and she kept re-injuring it. The decision was made to amputate.
The surgery was a success and Alexis lived an additional 12 1/2 years without the leg. Unfortunately arthritis in her only remaining front leg progressed to the point that she could no longer walk. Despite Rimadyl, Adequan, Cosequin, Tramadol, and Morphine Alexis remained unable to stand. Alexis was put to sleep March 7th, 2007. She is missed.
